On the occasion of Alice’s christening, July 2002
Stars fill the Universe with light. The amount of light produced by a single star called Alice is given by the above equation, where L is the total energy released from the surface of “Star Alice” per second, ε is total energy produced each second by each gram of star stuff inside “Star Alice” and Ma is the mass of “Star Alice”. This is one of the basic equations astronomers use to work out all they know about the evolution and behaviour of stars.
